Smokin Hot Wife. Really?

You have probably seen this by now. The preacher who prayed at the Nashville NASCAR Race last weekend. Thanked God for his "smokin hot wife." Seriously.

Now I am a Ricky Bobby fan as much as the next guy. I have the film memorized. So I get the humor.

And I understand the thrill of praying before 43 cars start their 800 HP engines in front of 100,000 people. I had fun praying at Talladega and Atlanta races myself.

But when asked why he said this, the pastor said he hoped to get the attention of folks in the stands. He succeeded in that. I just never realized that prayers were intended to impress people or get their attention. Always figured they were intended for God. At least I hope so.

Gravatar.com I didn't take it as a prayer to impress people, but perhaps to get the attention of those who do not normally pray. I DID however think it was entirely inappropriate to say that about one's spouse in front of hundreds of people. Goes against modesty first and just plain dignity but I can see how one might forget such things in our culture which prizes appearance and especially good-looks above everything else. In that respect it was shallow and it would highly embarrass a truly virtuous wife.

Gravatar.com Pastor's words in a Sirius radio interview after the race
“I want to get somebody’s attention, so that’s been our desire every time we’ve been up there, to try to make an impact on the fans and give them something they’ll remember, and maybe they’ll go home on a Friday night or a Saturday night and say, 'Maybe I ought to get up and go to church in the morning,'" Nelms said.

Notice the absence of the words "God," "Jesus" or anything else resembling the Divine. How does one discuss prayer without God? This was a "prayer" from, about, and for people, not God.

Gravatar.com Ohh come ON! Really?!? Where is your sense of humor. I thought the prayer was great. Instead of the pad crap before every NASCAR race of safety and thanking for the beautiful day, etc... etc... this man actually had a geniunue prayer that was different and still 100% sincere (I am sure he is grateful for his wife, and as a NASCAR fan, I too am grateful for Fords, Sunoco, and Goodyear!)

It was probably one of the most genuine prayers we have heard in a setting like that. I gotta believe this prayer was more in the vein of the Tax Collector than all the other Pharisee prayers we have heard via Fox on Sunday afternoons.

Gravatar.com Furthermore, how can you not like the energy and the passion and the excitement in this prayer. I wish my prayers sounded like this most of the time. And he starts with Father (just like Jesus taught us), and he prays to Lord, and he claims it in Jesus' name. So I am confused as to what you are talking about the absence of words like God or Jesus.

Seriously, that's the part you object to? Not the fact that he included blatant advertising in his prayers (as Jesus supposedly said, you cannot serve both God and Mammon)? Not the fact that Jesus specifically said not to pray in public like the hypocrites?
Always figured they were intended for God. At least I hope so.

If that were so, he'd have gone into his closet to pray and not have done it in front of 100,000 people anyway.

Not to mention that it was most likely a lie, as I cannot really imagine a "smoking hot" woman marrying that guy.

Not to mention all the various sponsors of the race...

I don't know how genuine it was. After all, all he did was to quote a hit movie from a few years ago.
Besides, do we know what his supposedly hot wife looks like? Somehow, given what he looks like and that he is a pastor I seriously doubt his wife's hotness.
and as a NASCAR fan, I too am grateful for Fords, Sunoco, and Goodyear!)

You really had no problem with him having blatant sponsor advertisements as part of his prayer? That was the worst part of this prayer as far as I am concerned.

Gravatar.com You think that's bad. I heard this guy on the radio that draws the line in the sand of what a husband can think and say about his wife at 280 lbs! Who are you to say who is Smokin Hot??
Real Christian remark there Mr Hunt. Teaches a great lesson to the audience. Hey everyone. Fat jokes are fine.

Hope you loose lots of listeners. K BYE!

Description
The Allen Hunt Show is about faith and life, plain and simple. According to a Gallup Poll in May of 2005, 85% of Americans consider their faith important or fairly important to their lives. Yet there is a gap on the talk radio airwaves that examines where faith and life come together. This show fills that gap like nothing currently on the radio. This is not one more political talk show, nor is it another faith-based counseling show because ultimately, life is not about what is right or left, but about what is right and wrong. The Allen Hunt Show takes on real life issues, with real life people, to see how faith can have a real impact. Join us on Saturdays from 9-12 PM and Sundays from 6-9 PM. Blessings!
