Inheritance Mess

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Been in a family situation where a loved one died and the inheritance became such a messy issue? There is little you can experience that would be this divisive. Had lunch with a friend recently who was going through this, and I was remarkably surprised how well he was taking it.

Gravatar.com Inheritance Mess Comment: My maternal grandparents had an estate of 40 acres of property with an old farm house and later my maternal uncle built a brand new rambler all paid for on the property. My grandparents are deceased and the estate went to my uncle and mom. My uncle died young of ALS, and following his death, my mother died of ALS. My long time abusive stepfather inheritated the whole estate and is living in the new home. Six months before my mother died, he had an affair with a woman right under her nose. My mom had not been gone yet a year and he married his mistress and changed the will so she would inherit everything. My siblings (bio and half) and I are not wealthy but have managed in life--we are devastated. We can't afford a lawyer to fight my stepfather. I even suspect he may have sophicated my mom in the head but I have no proof. My sister and I survive with our Christian faith. Unfortunately my brother uses alcohol and drugs to soothe his pai, but he remains very bitter. I have to block it out of my mind as it is too painful. He abused us as kids, but we never saw this one coming. We had been told all our lives we would inherit the property which has deep meaning to us as my grandparents worked extremely hard for what they had. I learned that I will take good care when drawing up my will in small as my estate is. Thank you for bringing up this topic, it helps so I don't feel so alone.
