First Human Embryonic Stem Cells Used

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

The first human embryonic stem cells have been used in research. I am labeling this moment the beginning of the end. Up until this point we could probably have stated that we still value human life (despite what the Supreme Court says). But as this becomes more popular, and more used, you will see a society that says, I will gladly take the life of another to save my (or my child's) life.

Gravatar.com Alan you are way off on this one. First, you should have done more research to make your analogies legimate and appropriate. Relating embryonic research to robins eggs, nazi experimentation and teens wanting cars, was highly inappropriate and frankly, made your argument illogical and invalidated any legitimacy to the conversation. Secondly, you are a liar. Look into the future, past the first year of your daughter's injury. She will now be 17, likely have had her first bed sore or two on her coccyx or hip. She will have had mulitple surgeries, including the one to place a feeding tube to syringe food for nourishment. She will have had several urinary tract infections from catheterization to empty her urine as she is incontinent. She will have some care aid disimpacting her bowels, with a finger or two up her little bottom, as she will have problems moving her stool. Or will you be there to look after her daily care!!!! Change her diaper, change her peripad, wipe the drool off her face. She will be attempting to breathe through a tracheostomy and hoping that if she chokes on her own mucous, someone will be there to do abdominal thrusts to assist her to cough and breathe. Or will that be you, suctioning mucous out of her trach so that she can stop panicking? It is probable that she will be on antidepressants to cope with the physical pain and mental pain of her grief. What if her best friend is in that same accident and has the same injury, however her family chooses to accept cord treatment and you deny this potential for your daughter. Do you not think there would be shame? Do you not think your daughter would hate you for denying her life? You do not have the right to this decision. It is her body and if she chooses care, it is her choice. YOu can make the argument that you would refuse care for your body, your choice. However, you are a liar, if in the moment of that injury, as your child, your embryo, your sperm, looks up at you with her pleading eyes and tears,( because that is all she can do) and listens to you deny her right to life and choice. You are killing her spirit and her body. Will you be there attending to her or will you abandon her to the care of others? Will YOU do the right thing by your daughter in the face of the consequences you have choosen? Or will you be selfish and leave it to others to lift her , turn her , care for her , while you go about your life!
