Jimmy Carter: USA Isn't Better Than It Was 30-Years Ago
Tuesday, October 26, 2010
Jimmy Carter is out there toting his new book. But while he is doing so, he makes the statement that America really isn't better off than it was in 1980. Are you kidding me Jimmy Carter? This country was great 30 years ago, but this country is definitely better than it was in 1980. The innovation of the internet alone makes this a better country - and the internet came from us.

But he didn't really mean technological advancement here, did he? And furthermore, US is lacking in many technological areas. You mentioned the Internet. Well, US is trailing behind many developed nations in broadband penetration. And much of our infrastructure is in dire need to modernization, another area where most other developed countries are way ahead, courtesy of our outdated Senate where Senators representing 11% of the population can block legislation!
One area where US is way ahead of other developed countries is incarceration. And much of that is for victimless crimes such as pot or consensual sex.
So while I definitely do not remember US in 1980, for reasons both temporal and geographic, Jimmy Carter is probably not that far off.
