Food Stamps, Military Pay, and Poker

Wednesday, December 8, 2010

The economy is bad. Nobody needs to tell you that. We have a higher amount of people on food stamps than ever. And to top it off, all federal employees have a pay freeze. All except soldiers. Those in the military are getting a 1.4% bump - but for some reason, they are complaining about that. I support our military - and am grateful for what our troops do - but why they think they are special and should get a larger pay raise when no one else does in the federal government is beyond me.

Gravatar.com I don't agree with one person on your show who said the Military is worse than the lowest paid civilian. I was in the Air Force during the Vietnam Era. When I got out of the military as a Sgt.-E-5, my unemployment compensation was equal to $75.00 per week. That's $300 a month paying $150 for a duplex apartment and the rest for food and utilities. Nowadays, an E-5 who is married in the military gets Food allowance, housing allowance and if you're on a submarine for instance, you get dive pay, etc. I work on a Sub Base and I've never seen so many military people that have been in the military less than 4 years drive such nice cars, afford to buy a house, etc. I appreciate their sacrifice for this country, but I think there was more sacrifice during and prior to the Vietnam era. 1.4% is an adequate pay raise in my view. Most civilian workers that work for the federal government probably don't mind their pay frozen during this hard times. I would like to see Congress offer to freeze their pay to set the ultimate example.
