Riots Break Out In Middle East Over Quran Burning

Friday, April 1, 2011

Riots broke out in Afghanistan over the burning of one Koran by a pastor in Florida. People died in the riots. Yet for some reason the media wants to vilify the pastor as if he is the one that has done something wrong. What is going on in this world. I don't advocate Quran burning, but freedom of speech is a right that we stand by in the country. And frankly, murder is a crime. We have become a "battered-wife" country that is somehow justifying the violent actions of legitimately crazy people because of our actions. This needs to stop now.

Gravatar.com When you invade Muslim countries and torture and kill Muslims by the hundreds of thousands like we've been doing in Iraq,Afghanistan and Pakistan and who knows where else for close to ten years now even as we say we're not at war with Muslims and an American burns their self identifying sacred text, then of course Muslims believe we are at war with Muslims. Then it is disingenuous to frame the burning of the Koran as just another expression of freedom of speech that those intolerent Muslims just foolishly don't appreciate about us wonderful Americans. The problem is what they understand is that we are at war with their religion and they will kill to defend it and therefore themselves. Though when it comes to insulting Muslims we love to bring up our tolerance for unpopular speech in the name of freedom of speech, the reality is there are unpleasnt consequences in this country for expressing offense speech; people get fired all the time in this country for expressing their "freedom of speech". And when a painting exhibited in an American museum is interpreted by some Christians as insulting to Christianity there were enough people in positions of power and influence in the media and in government that vilified the artist. Hence there was an opposing force to mitigate the offense. When Americans choose to offend veterans such as the anctics of the Baptist church ,again there are opposing forces vilifying them. This is no need for violence to break out when the prevailing culture marginalizes those who offend the sensibilities of the dominent culture. The American military are not killing Christians but they are killing Muslims. And when Iran's president denies the Holocaust and labels Israel "illigitimate' [which is different then saying every Israeli should be killed or even that Israel should be destroyed. native Americans might say that the creation of the U.S.A. was "illigitimate', that doesn't mean they want to destroy all Americans]., we talk about starting a war with them.So much for their freedom of expression. And what would happen in this country if people used the "n" word publicaly without repurcussions from the poweres that be in the media or government? How long before acts of violence would break out? This equally applies to other acts of "protected free speech", where groups of people are offended. And what if we were attacked and occupied by a Muslim country and Muslims in those countries took to burning and vilifying the flag even as the Muslim occupiers were bombing us and maintaing they are not at war with America. How long before acts of violence would break out against anyone perceived as collaborating with the Muslim "occupiers?.And if every talk show media outlet was continuously bashing any group- veterans, blacks, gays, etc, etc, with no consequences to them, how long before violence would break out?Even now threats of violence have been made on the Westetboro chruch group in spite of the fact that they have been uniformely vilified by the culture. The way it is now people who are even remotely perceived to have insulted any group are either fired or called to back track and apologize incessesntly. What would happen if they didn't or if the response was only "freedom of speech " is protected ?You conveniently ignore the fact that we have invaded and occupied Muslim homelands when you talk about how "crazy" they are for perceiving that we are at war with Islam and you ignore that the burning of the Koran by an American is for them the iconic symbol of that fact. The pastor who did this was not ignorant of that fact. And by the way there are laws on the books that do not protect the expression of "fighting' words". How they snuck that by us even as we brag about our freedom of speech ,I don't get but it is there on the books. And if you think that even today the burning of amAmerican flag would not result in violence then you are being disingenuous. It even used to be against the law precisely because the offense is so great it could lead to violence. What's gong on in this world is that the Muslim world dares to defend themselves and their religion and are not swayed by our hypocritical claims of tolerating offensive speech.
And what's more "crazy" then ignoring the elephant in the room ;the fact that America has been at war in Muslim countries for almost ten year? And not taking that into account in this discussion of "freedom of speech" and Koran burning smacks of pure malice towards Muslims.
