Quran Burning Just Won't Go Away

Monday, April 4, 2011

You had General Petraeus come out over the weekend and make a statement of condemnation of Terry Jones' Quran burning stunt. Now you have Senators like Harry Reid and Lindsay Graham getting into it as well. I - unlike most in the media - actually understand the difference between Muslims view of the Quran versus Christians view of the Bible. But still, it was one dude, burning pages in a book and it has sparked an international riot and killings. Yet he is the one vilified in the situation. Is Terry Jones stupid, sure. Is this just a giant publicity stunt, sure. But he isn't evil. Those killing UN workers in Afghanistan are evil. And let's not lose track of that.

Gravatar.com As a Catholic you know acts are evil, not people. All people; everyone, is capable of good and evil. Yes, of course it was evil to murder people .But Americans have been murdering and torturing the Afghans for nine years now. Even though we cynically claim we're not at war with them, .As if by using the words freedom or democracy when we do our murdering and torturing those acts become less then evil. When an American burns a Koran while Americans are waging war in their country the Afghans correctly interpret that as an act of war against Islam.Anyone who is seen as a collaborator is fair game . When we see Arab/Muslims burning American flags and shouting anti-American slogans we justify waging war against them.We label all Muslim/Arabs as evil anti-Americans.[That is why we were blind sighted by the uprings in Egypt and everywhere;it went against our self serving bigoted generaliztions.Even now many anti-Arab bigots are longing to see the "evil' Muslim brotherhood of evil AlQuada rear it s ugly head so we can reclaim our bigotted narrative that validates mass murder of Muslims .] We are no different then the Afghans who killed out of revenge for the Koran burning, though our technology conceals our equally vicious and hateful response to our perceptions of their "anti-Americanism." [Americanism being our 21st century religion].And we have our own sensibilities of what is offensive and not acceptable. American prisons are filled with people who have committed acts of violence including murder based on what someone said. That we have laws distinguishing premeditated murder from murder based on spur- of- the- moment anger shows that we too acknowledge that words can cause people to be violent. The mythic wild west with barroom brawls resulting from words spoken is a theme in our culture as are laws recognizing the concept of "fighting words" ,where words can provoke violence. And as a Catholic I remember being taught by the nuns in the early sixties that better to die or kill then allow the desicration of a consecrated Host. And many Americans would rather die or kill another then allow the flag to be trampled. So stop all this thin skinned hypocrasy. Though it's true that the U.N. workers did not burn the Koran, they are perceived as proxys for the Americans who like Jones, and the America military, are at war with them [their religion is their identity].And here in America riots where people have committed violence based on the words of others have also occurred. There is notihng "crazy' about that perception and what they did was not any MORE EVIL then what the Americans have been doing for 9 years out of revenge for 9-11. Blessed are the paeace makers, not the war mongers. And when we want other cultures to have the same sensibilities that we have, then we are in fact cultural imperialists, and when we have invaded and occupied a country and expect them to take on American sensibilities we have become actual imperialists. The Afghans perceive this and they will fight for their homeland, their religion and their culture by any means necessary, the same way we would if the circumstances were reversed. Their acts of murder against us are no more evil then our acts of murder against them.
