Prison for Panhandlers

Sunday, October 2, 2011

In an economy where lots of people are suffering, Michigan remarkably has made it a crime to panhandle. And Grand Rapids has gotten quite tough, arresting close to 400 panhandlers over the last 3 years. Most folks who live on the streets suffer from mental illness. And my faith teaches me that compassion and generosity are good things. Putting panhandlers in jail is absurd. And unless you feel threatened, helping another person is the right thing to do.
