DFACS Debacle
Sunday, December 11, 2011
Atlanta's news this week has been dominated by the Jorelys Rivera tragedy, where a 7 year old girl was abducted in her apartment complex, abused, and murdered. A parent's worst nightmare. Sadly, the state of Georgia made the situation worse by removing Jorelys' two younger sisters from the home and their mother. First, this smacks of blaming the mother for her child's death. Second, in trying to do good, the state essentially removed the girls from the family setting they needed most in their hour of tragic loss and anguish. Not to mention depriving the mother of the presence of her two children as she dealt with the shock of the violent death of her oldest child. Children should only be removed from families in the most extreme cases, and as a last resort, because removing kids often causes more damage than it does good.
