Separation of Math and History

On MLK weekend, a Gwinnett County school is enmeshed in debating math questions that incorporate the history of slavery. 3rd grade classes received math word problems involving Frederick Douglass and slavery since they were studying those topics in their history lessons. The NAACP was outraged and demanded that the teachers be fired. On the contrary, these teachers should be commended. If you are going to teach about slavery in 3rd grade, the kids should learn about the horrors of it rather than some sanitized version, and incorporating history into math is helpful for both subjects. Frederick Douglass was a great hero, and the horrors he endured merit learning not avoiding.
