Who Would Jesus Tax?

President Obama addressed the National Prayer Breakfast this week and suggested that Jesus would increase taxes on the wealthy. Mr. Obama was very forthright about his own Christian faith and how it shapes his ideas on tax policy in particular. His comments reflected a poor understanding of Scripture and theology, especially in the area of giving. Jesus talked a lot about giving - which is voluntary, charitable, and life-changing. Jesus said next to nothing about taxation - which is mandatory, coercive, and paid for at threat of imprisonment. The difference between the two is crucial.
