Freedom of Religion vs. Protecting Children

My daughter leaving for college put me in a really pensive mood of late. This past week a Wisconsin court convicted Dale Neumann for killing his daughter by denying her medical care in favor of using faith healing. Earlier in the summer an Oregon jury convicted a father of criminal mistreatment (but not of manslaughter) for a daughter that died because the family relied on prayer instead of a medical doctor for treating her ailing condition. Although I'm a big proponent of freedom of religion, I'm not sure if this is a tenable position if religion does undue harm unto children. Does the state have the right to intervene in such extreme cases? When does faith genuinely cross over into being irresponsible, reckless, or even immoral? Does faith ever justify bad decisions that ultimately harm one's kids? I am profoundly unsure of my own views on this matter and want to talk through it with my listeners tonight.
