Celebrate Recovery: Were only as sick as our secrets Isa 57.18-19

I. Testimony of Mike R.
The pain ages 6-12, molestation, told his fault, man trusted by his parents
How linger and affect ages 13-48 buried deep within, intimacy, anger, shame, trust, marriage
How heal preparing and training CR leaders, turned out to heal him, entered seeking to help others find healing, instead found healing himself put responsibility where it belongs, forgive, release
No matter past, God will heal you (Isa. 57.18-19; Jer. 3.22; 2 Cor. 5.16-19; Jam. 5.13-17; 1 Pt 2.24)
Listen to what God says
18 I have seen his ways, but I will heal him;
I will guide him and restore comfort to him, (Isa. 57.18)
This series is going to be wonderful because we will discover that God heals those things deep within us hurts, habits, and hang-ups if only we will allow Him
II. He heals
A) What has been done to you
As Mike has experienced pain and the shame of having been molested deep wounds that causes for years but God heals what has been done TO you
And He heals
B) What has been done by you
(Num. 32.23; Ps. 32.1-7; 103.1-17)
Because a lot of us have habits and hangups that have caused our lives to careen off the road a lot of poor choices and a lot of dumb, even hurtful, things have been done by us not just to us but by us
Rogers Badenhead was hoping for that healing too
He is a crafty fellow and when Pope JP2 died, Rogers immediately registered the web domain name benedict16.com figured there was a good chance that would be the new popes name
Someone else registered popebenedict16.com already getting $16K on ebay
So when the Vatican approached Rogers about acquiring the domain name he had registered, he said it was not for sale after all, he was a Catholic, and did not want to offend 1.1 billion Catholics plus his grandmother
Instead, he had 3 requests
1) One of those hats
2) Free stay at the Vatican hotel
3) Total absolution, forgiveness, no questions asked for the 3rd week of March, 1987
Kind of makes you wonder what he did during the 3rd week of March, 1987, doesnt it?
I mean, we all have one our own 3rd week of March, 1987
Time in the military, or in college, or when we were feeling hemmed in, or wanted to see what the world looked like when we entered a season of stupidity, recklessness
We all have at least one period in life that we would like to extract
If I had a box of videos up here of your entire life, you know that there is at least one tape you would like to sneak up here and remove right?
That is your 3rd week of March, 1987
Some of us have several I might add
And usually what happens, unless we deal with those moments things we did get buried deep in our souls we think they have gone away
People we hurt, damage we did we try to forget
But it is really not gone and usually it just keeps bubbling up
And we need to be healed from the pain or the anger of what we have done
III. That is what happened to David
Things really started well for David
Took care of Goliath emerged as the leader Israel needed
Became king prosperity came, victories piled up
And David got bored at time of year when kings go out to war, David stayed at home in his palace
Out one afternoon when he sees beautiful Bathsheba bathing in the sun
And his desire overtakes him
Takes her for himself thinks he has gotten away with it
But Bathsheba turns up pregnant
David then enlists his own men to try to have Uriah, her husband, return from his military post to be with his wife so he will think he is the father of the child
To no avail cover up does not work
Lust, adultery, cover-up, deceit
Ultimately leads to having his men arrange the battle so that Uriah is killed in a battle in all likelihood the deaths of other soldiers are caused so lust, adultery, deceit, cover-up, manipulation, murder
Remarkably for some period of time, David probably thinks he has gotten away with it
But the pain of that 3rd week of March, 1987 just does not go away like that
Pain of hurt we have inflicted on others, the destruction that results from our poor habits
May get buried
But until we let Gods hand enter it just keeps bubbling up
For David it does
See it when he writes psalm 32
When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
My strength was sapped as in the heat of summer
Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
And did not cover up my iniquity
I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
Just like Rogers Badenhead, here nearly 20 years later, trying to come to terms with what he did 3rd week of March, 1987, so too David, King of Israel, had hurts buried deep within his soul from the pain he had caused with his poor choices
Hurts, habits, and hangups those secrets that we are carrying
Are like a toxin in our system
Anitas grandmother is a classic Georgia country through and through
Has natural cure for everything and as a kid, Anita dreaded going to her grandmothers house if she were the least bit sick cures were usually not pretty or fun
Particularly if you have sinus or nasal congestion
Cure was warm salt water poured into your nostrils upside down
Makes my skin curl right now
But it worked to get the sickness out of your system
You cannot heal until the sickness is out of your system
Same thing true Mike discovered it, Rogers knows it, David experienced it
Hurts, habits, hangups secrets do not just go away
And the place to deal with them is with God
He heals
IV. 1st Step to Healing: Admit you need help
We are all carrying secrets and most of them are causing us pain
And the first step is simple walk yourself through these statements
Simple to say but very hard to be honest honest with yourself and with God
A) I am not God (Job 38-39; Psalms 138.1-10; 145.3)
B) He is in control Matt. 6.25-34; 1 Cor. 15.24-28)
C) He loves me and will never stop loving me (1John 3.1, 16; Luke 15; Ps. 103.17)
D) He is all I need (Isa. 53.4-6; Matt. 7.24-27)
No matter the past, God will heal you
IV. Today, a personal inventory list of hurts, habits and hangups on back of your sermon notes
Time of guided prayer to acknowledge the secrets we are carrying

Your ticket to take that step to be honest with yourself and with God
